Luxury Residential New Build- Cheshire

MJ Consulting Engineers provided full structural engineering services for this high-value residential and luxury residential new build in Cheshire, delivered to a sale value of £1.5m. The project comprised a bespoke luxury home designed to maximise space, light and architectural impact. The structural solution utilised load-bearing masonry construction, combined with engineered timber joists and strategically designed steel beams to achieve large, open-plan living areas. Steel frames were incorporated to support feature glazed gables, enabling expansive glazing while maintaining structural efficiency and clean architectural lines. MJ Consulting Engineers supported the client throughout the entire project lifecycle, from initial planning and detailed design through to construction and completion. Close collaboration with the wider design team ensured the structural design aligned seamlessly with the architectural vision, delivering a high-quality, contemporary home with robust engineering at its core.

Rolex Façade, Bond Street, London

MJ Consulting Engineers delivered the structural design and validation for the 2025 Christmas installation at Rolex, Old Bond Street, London. The project featured suspended illuminated fluted bezels and stars, requiring precision engineering to support large-scale festive elements. We engineered a bespoke hybrid fixing strategy utilising a vertical lattice of steel and aluminium tubes. To protect the architecture, we prioritised non-intrusive methods, employing custom compression frames clamped securely to window reveals and columns. This approach eliminated the need for invasive drilling in sensitive areas while ensuring maximum stability. Rigorous assessments of wind loads and weight distribution validated the integrity of the framework and secondary brackets supporting the CNC-machined decorations. The result is a robust, safe display that seamlessly integrates with the building's façade.

Peelers Yard Development

MJC provided full structural engineering design services for this new 7/8-storey multiple occupancy residential scheme on Goulden Street, Manchester. The superstructure comprises a hybrid of light gauge steel (LGS) and hot rolled (HR) steel, with LGS stud walls and joists supporting Lewis Deck floors throughout the residential levels. A transfer podium at first floor level was developed to accommodate changes in layout and load paths, with hot rolled steel elements providing stability and long-span support where required. MJC designed lateral stability systems, floor build-ups and key interfaces between LGS and HR steel to meet the structural demands of the development. Coordination was essential to integrate the structure above the podium and retain the existing 25m Victorian chimney stack as part of the site’s heritage.

Christmas Decorations at Van Cleef & Arpels, London

MJ Consulting Engineers teamed with JMS Engineers to undertake the structural engineering design and validation for the installation of Christmas decorations on the façade of Van Cleef & Arpels. The project required detailed assessment of wind loads, load distribution, and anchor strength to ensure the safety and stability of the installation. Engineering Techniques The location’s specific environmental factors, including wind speed, building dimensions, and proximity to nearby structures, were analysed in detail. Advanced wind load assessments provided precise insights into the forces acting on the decorations, forming the basis of a safe and effective design. The decorations, mounted on a lightweight aluminium box frame, were designed to withstand vertical and horizontal loads from their self-weight and external forces such as wind pressure. The load distribution was thoroughly analysed, and all assessments confirmed that the design complied with ultimate limit state requirements. The anchors, fixed into the brick façade using high-performance mortar resin, were tested to stringent standards. The testing verified their ability to resist the calculated forces, with sufficient safety margins to accommodate all foreseeable conditions. Cantilever moments and tension forces were also reviewed to ensure full compliance with safety standards. Material selection and structural verification processes ensured that the aluminium frame could handle all stress factors without compromising its integrity. The overall system, from anchor placement to load distribution, was designed for optimal performance and aesthetic integration. Result This project successfully demonstrated MJ Consulting Engineers’ ability to integrate detailed structural solutions with aesthetic requirements. The Christmas decorations were securely installed, meeting all safety and performance expectations while enhancing the festive appeal of the Van Cleef & Arpels façade. The outcome highlights the company’s expertise in delivering bespoke structural designs for unique and complex installations.

Mikvah

MJ Consulting Engineers led the structural and civil engineering efforts on a four-storey Mikvah development in the London Borough of Haringey, an essential facility for the community. MJC began by overseeing the demolition of existing structures, followed by the installation of an unpropped contiguous piled perimeter retaining wall, reinforced with a capping beam, and subsequent excavation to form a habitable basement. For the superstructure, MJC designed a robust reinforced concrete framework to support the three above-ground levels, which include a second-floor plant room. Once completed, the building will feature 44 private bathrooms and six Mikvah pools, distributed across the lower floors. MJC provided a full civil and structural design service, ensuring the project met the highest standards of stability and functionality.

Old Milverton Hall

MJ Consulting Engineers provided structural design and drainage services for the renovation of Old Milverton Hall, a 19th-century building. Working with Leo Architects and Quadrant Surveying, MJC played a key role in converting the former NHS clinic into apartments and adding an extension. The project also included designing new build bungalows that complement the historic style of the existing structure. The renovation carefully preserved many original features while ensuring modern structural integrity and effective drainage. The result is a blend of historical charm with contemporary living, all while maintaining the unspoilt views of the surrounding area.

Why Rear Extensions in Manchester Fail Without Proper Structural Engineering

Rear extensions are one of the most popular forms of residential development in Manchester. From Victorian terraces in South Manchester to semi-detached homes across Greater Manchester, homeowners are increasingly choosing to extend rather than move. However, many rear extensions encounter delays, redesigns, or unexpected costs due to insufficient structural engineering input at the early stages. Engaging a qualified structural engineer in Manchester is essential to ensure your extension...
